New York City -- Target Corp. has won approval to put its signature red logo on one of Chicago's most famous buildings. The Permit Review Committee of the Commission on Chicago Landmarks on Thursday approved the chain’s request to allow its bull's eye to be placed on its new store planned for downtown Chicago.
The store will be located in the Sullivan Center, at 1 S. State St. The building, designed by famed architect Louis Sullivan, was built in 1899 and is a designated historic landmark. It housed the Carson Pirie Scott department store from 1904 to 2007.
Target will lease 124,000 sq. ft. over two floors of the building. The store will feature the chain’s new City Target format.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the proposal lets Target place its bull’s-eye logo inside the building’s famed glass-enclosed entrance at State and Madison. Along State Street, Target would hang alternating windows two-story banners in the company’s red color.
“Target is honored to be a part of the preservation of a Chicago treasure and we are excited to bring unique design elements to the Sullivan Center,” the company said in a statement. “We focus on building stores that satisfy the unique, local flavors of our guests and communities and believe our CityTarget store will be authentic and relevant to Chicago.”
